Anger engenders mixed emotions. It often leaves us feeling damaged or racked
with guilt.
There is a view that to be emotionally literate means expressing
a whole range of feelings,
but ANGER is potentially our most dangerous emotion
and as its extreme, it can lead to death.
In my professional work with anger, I take the view that is a secondary
emotion and that it
arises from a primary emotion such as fear
or vulnerability. Fear or vulnerability may
be bound up
with embarrassment, disappointment, injury, envy or loss.
All of these feelings
represent a threat of some kind. We choose anger more often
than not
to cover up this pain of vulnerability and look
to blame and become hostile, even dangerously violent.
It is time we understood anger. It is time we considered other ways of responding to fears and threats.
